The Netherlands plans to acquire 46 Leopard-2A8 battle tanks as part of a new initiative supported by the German government.

State Secretary Gijs Tuinman announced this decision today in a letter to the House of Representatives. The new battle tanks are expected to enter service between 2027 and 2030, with the new tank battalion accommodating approximately 500 soldiers.

In the Defense Note 2024 released in September, the minister outlined plans for the army to reintroduce tanks, with a budget allocation of €1 to 2.5 billion. This move is part of the Netherlands' response to NATO's call for enhanced land combat capabilities. Tuinman emphasized that tanks are crucial for the armed forces' combat power due to their heavy armament and protective capabilities against enemy fire.

The selection of the Leopard-2A8 is based on operational needs, promoting interoperability and international collaboration. The tank meets all operational requirements and can be rapidly acquired through the German demand bundling initiative, the Dutch defense ministry said in a release.

The establishment of the new battalion will be linked to a training area in Bergen-Hohne, Germany, which offers adequate facilities for realistic tank training. Current Dutch training facilities do not provide sufficient space for a full battalion.

While the initial requirement was for 52 battle tanks, the 46-unit purchase reflects a shift toward integrating unmanned systems in land, air, and maritime operations. The contract will also include options for six additional tanks, contingent on technological developments by 2027.

The project will encompass necessary spare parts, maintenance contracts, special tools, factory training, and documentation. The Netherlands has not operated its own tanks since 2011, following budget cuts. However, Dutch soldiers have maintained operational knowledge through participation in the 414 Tank Battalion, benefiting from German-Dutch military cooperation.
