The Swiss procurement agency, armasuisse, announced that KNDS Deutschland and GDELS will supply the Swiss Army's new artillery system with a 155 mm AGM mounted on the PIRANHA IV platform.
A procurement proposal for this artillery system will be presented to the Swiss Parliament next year.
The PIRANHA IV Heavy Mission Carrier, a 10x10 variant of the PIRANHA vehicle family already in use by the Swiss Army, has been chosen for its high payload capacity, mobility, and durability. This platform is designed to support heavy artillery, providing the stability needed for firing on the move and for maintaining agility over rough terrain. The vehicle’s design allows it to handle high-recoil artillery and enables efficient maneuvering with a tight turning radius, making it suitable for various combat scenarios. Its five axles, with four steerable, enhance its mobility and trench-crossing capabilities.
In its artillery configuration, the PIRANHA IV can carry a two-person crew, with space for an additional operator, and operates with an unmanned gun module, automating the processes of loading and aiming. The artillery system's mobility and automated features allow for quick redeployment, offering the Swiss Army enhanced flexibility in changing firing positions.
