HENSOLDT has secured a contract to update the sensor systems on 90 Fennek vehicles for the German Bundeswehr, modernizing them with the BAA III sensor package.
The project includes upgrading 30 Fennek scout vehicles from the outdated BAA I system and 50 Fennek Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) vehicles from BAA II, with a total of 92 BAA III sensor units ordered.
As part of this upgrade, ten additional BAA III sensor packages will be reserved as spare parts for long-term support, while two BAA III sets will be used by KNDS Deutschland for integration and verification. The contract value is in the mid double-digit million range.
This modernization project, carried out in close coordination with the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), is aimed at enhancing the Bundeswehr's reconnaissance capabilities.
Deliveries of the upgraded Fennek vehicles are scheduled to begin in early 2026.
The BAA III sensor package includes a laser target designator for precision targeting, a dual-band HDTV camera named ‘Red Kite’ for enhanced visibility in both visible and short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectrums, and a laser pointer for precise target illumination. These features improve reconnaissance effectiveness and enable day and night target detection.
