The Romanian government has formalized its decision to acquire 32 F-35 Lightning II fighter jets through the signing of a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) under the U.S. Foreign Military Sale program.

The U.S. State Department approved the $7 billion sale in September, and the Romanian Senate recently passed legislation to finalize the purchase.

Romania’s purchase of these fifth-generation multi-role stealth aircraft is expected to enhance its air defense capabilities and fortify NATO’s eastern flank amid heightened security concerns in the region.

Currently operating a fleet of upgraded F-16s, Romania plans to transition to the F-35 platform in the 2030s.

Incidents such as recent airspace violations near the Black Sea by Russian aircraft underscore the critical need for enhanced defense measures.

Last year, Romania, alongside the Netherlands, inaugurated the European F-16 Training Center. This facility accelerates pilot training and enhances the readiness of NATO forces. The addition of the F-35 program builds on this foundation.

Romania’s leadership has also facilitated critical infrastructure projects, including the squadron operations facility at Campia Turzii, designed to support U.S. and NATO operations. Additionally, NATO’s enhanced Air Policing mission benefits from contributions by Romanian, Spanish, and British forces stationed at key air bases.
