Poland and Slovakia have agreed to deepen their defense cooperation, with plans to sign an intergovernmental agreement on ammunition production soo.
The announcementwas made by Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz after discussions with Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák during an official visit to Bratislava on November 22. "We have agreed with the Prime Minister that we will prepare an intergovernmental agreement on strategic cooperation in the development of the arms industry. I hope that we will be able to sign this document soon. I am inviting the Prime Minister to Poland now. However, before that, representatives of our arms companies will visit Slovakia to strengthen this cooperation," said the Deputy Prime Minister.
Poland announced an investment of 3 billion zlotys (over $725 million) earlier this month to boost its ammunition production, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance amid potential threats from Russia. The government has also signed a letter of intent with domestic companies to manufacture nitrocellulose and multi-base powders, essential components for ammunition production.
Kosiniak-Kamysz praised Slovakia’s capacity for producing ammunition, particularly 155mm calibers, and stressed the value of collaboration in achieving large-scale, multi-caliber production.
Representatives from Polish defense companies will visit Slovakia to strengthen cooperation ahead of the agreement's signing. State and private companies from Poland and Slovakia are expected to collaborate closely, exchanging experience, technology, and resources to achieve mutual benefits.
The discussions also highlighted NATO and EU partnerships, with Kosiniak-Kamysz inviting Slovakia to join Poland’s East Shield initiative, which focuses on constructing fortifications along NATO’s eastern flank. He commended the collaboration between the countries' Special Forces and the air policing mission Poland has conducted over Slovakia, set to conclude by the end of the year.
