Eurofighter and the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) have finalized a contract for up to 24 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft for the Italian Air Force.
The contract is reportedly part of a larger Eurofighter program valued at €7.4 billion, with €690 million already allocated for initial stages.
The new Eurofighter Typhoons will replace Italy's Tranche 1 jets currently in service. These upgraded aircraft will feature latest avionics, enhanced weapon systems including Brimstone III and Meteor missiles, and improved connectivity, ensuring integration into future European defense networks.
The Italian contract follows Spain's announcement on December 20 to acquire 25 Eurofighter Typhoons.
“The additional 24 aircraft for Italy enhance its combat air capabilities and provide security for Europe and NATO,” said AVM Simon Ellard (ret.), General Manager of NETMA.
The new Italian aircraft will be manufactured at Leonardo’s Caselle facility, showcasing Italy’s role in the Eurofighter program. Leonardo, contributing 36% of the aircraft’s value, is responsible for key components, including the rear fuselage, left wing, and radar systems.
Additional contributions come from Italian firms such as ELT Group, which oversees the DAS PRAETORIAN electronic protection system, and Avio Aero, which supplies up to 19% of the EJ-200 engine. MBDA Italia also supports weapon systems integration, ensuring the program's economic benefits are distributed across Italy's defense industry.
