South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) conducted a power-up ceremony for the GOP Scientific Surveillance System Minor Performance Improvement Project at the 22nd Division of the Army on Friday, January 3.
This initiative marks the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) image analysis to the military’s security operations, aiming to enhance efficiency and reliability in border surveillance.
Launched in 2022, the GOP Scientific Surveillance System Minor Performance Improvement Project integrates modern technologies, including thermal imaging cameras with superior detection capabilities and AI-based image analysis functions. Following a successful purchase test evaluation in 2023, a contract was awarded to S1 Co., Ltd. Upgrades to surveillance cameras and control systems in the 22nd Division’s GOP and coastal units were finalized in December 2024.
The enhanced system addresses key vulnerabilities, such as false alarms and declining detection performance due to aging equipment. The integration of AI-powered image analysis ensures more accurate monitoring, even during adverse weather conditions or nighttime operations. This improvement boosts the operational efficiency and reliability of border security.
DAPA plans to leverage insights from this project to bolster the forward area border system as part of the upcoming GOP Scientific Border System Performance Improvement Project. This initiative is expected to further modernize defense infrastructure using AI-driven innovations.
