German Leopard 2A6 tank's protection and weaponry fall short when compared to Russia's T-90M Proryv, according to Russian experts.
Experts from Russian tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) analyzed a captured Leopard 2A6 and found that its protection levels are inferior to the Russian T-90M.
They concluded that the frontal turret and hull of the Leopard 2A6 offer kinetic and cumulative projectile resistance up to 850 mm and 1,200 mm, respectively. This is around 1.1 times weaker than the T-90M's protection, resembling older models like the T-90A. UVZ claims that the tank’s front armor, which protects it from projectiles, is also weaker than the T-90M.
UVZ noted that the Leopard 2A6 lacks breakthrough technologies. Additionally, the Leopard's main gun, the Rh120/L55 cannon, cannot deploy advanced missiles such as the LAHAT anti-tank guided missile, limiting its offensive capabilities against distant enemy targets.
However, the Leopard 2A6 offers some advantages, including its advanced transmission system. The tank can reverse at speeds up to 31 km/h, enabling quick retreats behind terrain without exposing its vulnerable rear. Its dual-flow turning mechanism also enhances maneuverability, giving the Leopard 2A6 an edge in close combat scenarios.
