The Netherlands Defence Ministry is investing in new communication systems for its Chinook, Cougar, NH90, and Apache helicopters to enhance tactical data exchange, with installations scheduled for 2026.
The Network Enabled Capabilities (NEC) systems will allow crews to share information faster and more effectively with each other and partners. The move addresses current shortcomings in the communication systems of military helicopters, which hinder efficient information sharing during missions.
At present, transport helicopters struggle to exchange critical data with other aircraft and ground units, impacting mission planning and execution. The manual process of planning missions is time-consuming, with risks of outdated information affecting operational safety. With the new NEC systems, 59 portable and modular boxes will be added, alongside upgraded software and hardware for mission planning, including 14 ground systems for command posts. These systems will be secured within an existing network, ensuring long-distance, secure communication.
The acquisition also supports interoperability with NATO allies, as the systems are compatible with European partners’ capabilities. The final delivery of these resources is expected by 2029.
