Switzerland has officially become a candidate member of the EU's Military Mobility project, a move aimed at improving military transportation across Europe.

The Netherlands, leading the initiative, aims to eliminate logistical barriers and speed up military travel across road, rail, air, and inland waterways within the EU.

The primary goal of Switzerland's participation is to enhance administrative processes through greater standardization, strengthening the unity of its defense capabilities. The country’s decision to join comes after an invitation from EU member states, finalizing its status as a candidate in the broader Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) framework, which includes non-EU nations like the U.S., Canada, and Norway.

The EU’s Military Mobility Initiative seeks to remove obstacles to military mobility, such as customs delays and infrastructure limitations, by facilitating the rapid movement of forces and equipment. The Netherlands, a key player in several defense initiatives, also supports cross-border military transport simplification alongside other projects in cyber defense, medical capabilities, and maritime mine countermeasures.

By joining this initiative, Switzerland aims to improve military mobility within Europe, enabling quicker and more effective responses to crises. The project is part of the broader Action Plan on Military Mobility (2022-26), which enhances transport infrastructure resilience for both civil and military uses.

While Switzerland plans to formally join after finalizing an administrative agreement, it also intends to participate in the Cyber Ranges Federation project to bolster its armed forces’ training and interoperability. Although Switzerland does not currently plan to engage in additional PESCO projects, the potential for future involvement remains open.
