Iran, Pakistan Explore Joint Weapons Production
Iran's Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri with Pakistan’s General Asim Munir in Islamabad, Monday.

Iran has expressed interest in collaborating with Pakistan on the joint production of military equipment, emphasizing the strengthening of defense ties.

This proposal came during the visit of Iran's Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, who met with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, in Islamabad, on Monday. Baqeri also held a separate meeting with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.

Baqeri highlighted the importance of intelligence sharing and coordinated efforts to combat terrorism along their shared border. He also commended Pakistan’s actions against the Jaish al-Adl group, suggesting joint military drills and cross-border patrols as part of enhanced cooperation.

In addition to border security, Baqeri proposed joint naval exercises, referencing the upcoming AMAN-25 multinational naval drills in Karachi from February 7-11, which are expected to involve several countries, including China. “Iran has been invited to partake in the international drills in Pakistan, and we will participate in this event,” he said.

Pakistan does not recognize Israel and supports an independent Palestinian state based on internationally agreed parameters. It has sent relief consignments to Gaza and set up the 'Prime Minister's Relief Fund' for those affected by the conflict. The Iranian armed forces chief also expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s stance on Gaza and Lebanon, according to the Presidency.

Beyond defense, economic cooperation was a key topic. Iran reported $1.7 billion in non-oil exports to Pakistan from March to December 2024. Both countries aim to increase bilateral trade to $10 billion annually, supported by initiatives such as barter and free trade agreements.
