Pratt & Whitney Establishes Clean Engine Technology Center in the Netherlands

RTX’s Pratt & Whitney has announced plans to establish a European Technology and Innovation Center (ETIC) in Houten, Netherlands, to drive research on energy-efficient and sustainable aviation technologies.

The ETIC will be co-located with RTX’s Collins Aerospace’s European Innovation Hub, strengthening collaborations with Dutch and European aerospace ecosystems.

The ETIC will focus on developing technologies aimed at improving propulsion efficiency and reducing emissions, supporting future aircraft powered by conventional and alternative aviation fuels, including hydrogen. According to Frank Preli, vice president of technology at Pratt & Whitney, the new center provides opportunities to work with engineering talent and engage in collaborations across Europe.

The center also aligns with RTX’s growing partnerships in the Netherlands. The company recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Netherlands Aerospace Group to advance aviation technology research. Additionally, a master research agreement with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) enables collaboration on academic projects with students and researchers.

Scheduled to begin operations in mid-2025, the ETIC will initially host a core team of engineers and scientists, with potential for expansion based on project needs. RTX employs around 22,000 people across 60 European locations, including 6,000 Pratt & Whitney employees primarily based in Poland and 270 Collins Aerospace employees in the Netherlands.

The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs has expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing its role in promoting sustainable aviation through innovation and international partnerships.
