Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) unveiled the upgraded Hindustan Jet Trainer HJT-36, now named ‘Yashas,’ at Aero India 2025.
The Yashas aircraft has been enhanced with advanced avionics and a new cockpit to improve training effectiveness and operational efficiency.
It features lightweight construction, addressing obsolescence issues with imported equipment by incorporating Indian Line Replaceable Units (LRUs).
According to HAL, the Yashas is tailored for Stage II pilot training and is capable of conducting counter-insurgency, counter-surface force operations, armament training, and aerobatics.
Powered by the FADEC-controlled AL55I jet engine, it delivers a superior thrust-to-weight ratio, optimized thrust management, and enhanced reliability.
With an elevated rear cockpit and drooped nose, the aircraft offers excellent visibility and situational awareness. It also features a modern glass cockpit equipped with Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) and a Head-Up Display (HUD). Key capabilities include stall and spin resistance, aerobatics, and the ability to carry up to 1,000 kg of armament.
The aircraft is also equipped with single-point ground refueling and defueling for quicker turnaround times.
