The Netherlands has completed its delivery of T-72 main battle tanks to Ukraine, fulfilling a commitment made in partnership with the United States and the Czech Republic.
Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans confirmed the final shipment during a Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG) meeting in Brussels. The UDCG, now led by the United Kingdom, coordinates military assistance from more than 50 nations. Brekelmans reiterated the Netherlands’ long-term military support, stating that over €10 billion has been committed, with approximately €6 billion already allocated.
The T-72 tanks supplied under this initiative have undergone modernization to enhance their firepower, protection, and mobility. These upgrades include reinforced armor, an advanced fire control system, and the capability to launch laser-guided anti-tank missiles. The tanks also come with over 100,000 spare parts, ensuring long-term operational readiness.
These tanks, originally designed in the Soviet era, remain relevant due to their adaptability and extensive availability of spare parts. The initiative was coordinated by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), aims to integrate existing armored platform.
Beyond tank deliveries, the Netherlands is expanding its support with additional armored vehicles. Brekelmans announced the donation of 25 YPR armored tracked vehicles designed for medical evacuation. These vehicles, based on the American M113A1 APC, have been in service with Ukrainian forces since 2022 and continue to provide logistical and battlefield mobility advantages.
Ukraine has also begun receiving F-16 fighter jets from the Netherlands, though specific numbers remain undisclosed for security reasons. The Dutch government has emphasized that these deliveries align with NATO-backed efforts to modernize Ukraine’s military and improve interoperability with Western systems.
