Five research projects in Australia will receive up to $250,000 each over 18 months under the Queensland Defence Science Alliance’s (QDSA) 2024 Collaborative Research Grants to develop technologies addressing complex defense challenges.
The total value of this funding round exceeds $3 million, including co-funded investments. The QDSA is part of the Australian Defence Science and Universities Network (ADSUN), connecting the Department of Defence with researchers from universities, industry, and research institutions.
The winning projects cover quantum security, autonomous systems, and advanced manufacturing:
Transitioning to Quantum-Safe: Led by the University of Queensland with Griffith University, University of the Sunshine Coast, and Semicon Pty Ltd, this project focuses on defending against quantum threats by advancing quantum-safe applications for national security.
Integrating Long-Range Cargo UAVs: Charles Darwin University, in collaboration with Griffith University, SAI Dynamics Pty Ltd, and Safran, will develop and test Australian-made heavy-fuel uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) to deliver medical supplies over long distances.
Autonomous Littoral AI Marine Threat Detection System: Griffith University, Charles Darwin University, and EPE Pty Ltd will create a mobile system combining uncrewed ground vehicles, remote electromagnetic sensors, and aerial systems to detect sub-surface objects and other maritime threats.
3D Printing Ceramics for Aerostructures: James Cook University, with the University of Queensland and Lockheed Martin Australia, will 3D print and test ceramic structures for thermal management in hypersonic applications.
Rapid Medical Supply Delivery: The University of Queensland, Outer Loop Engineering, and SAAB Australia will develop technology to deliver critical medical supplies within 72 seconds over five kilometers to support time-sensitive trauma care.
The QDSA grant program received 41 submissions from across Queensland and the Northern Territory, aligned with the 2024 National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program.
Charles Darwin University is the newest member of the QDSA under the ADSUN framework.
