Dutch F-35 fighter jets intercepted 23 Russian aircraft over NATO’s eastern flank during a four-month airspace surveillance mission, which has now concluded with Portugal assuming the role.
Operating from Ämari Air Base in Estonia, the Dutch air force detachment consisted of four aircraft and around 150 personnel. Their mission included monitoring NATO’s borders and conducting quick reaction alert (QRA) operations to respond to unidentified aircraft approaching NATO airspace.
The F-35s contributed to NATO’s deterrence efforts while reassuring Estonia and neighboring allies. The detachment also participated in joint training exercises, including shooting down drones over the Baltic Sea with AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles and cross-servicing drills to enhance interoperability with foreign bases.
