The Argentine Army has officially received two new Bell 407 GXi helicopters, replacing its aging SA 315B LAMA fleet after nearly five decades of service.
The new aircraft were presented today during a ceremony in Mendoza by Defense Minister Luis Petri, who emphasized the helicopters' role in enhancing high-mountain operations and rescue missions in the Andes.
"These helicopters mark a before and after for mountain aviation in Argentina," Petri said. He recalled the service of the now-retired LAMAs, stating, "They saved lives and reached stranded people in extreme conditions for 49 years."
The helicopters—registered AE-340 and AE-341—will serve in the 8th Mountain Army Aviation Section and are tailored for high-altitude flying. Petri noted their arrival follows a government push led by President Javier Milei to modernize the Armed Forces.
The Bell 407 GXi’s digital cockpit features multifunction displays, synthetic vision, and a three-axis autopilot. The helicopters are powered by a Rolls-Royce turbine with FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control), offering improved flight control and performance in mountainous terrain.
Capable of carrying five passengers and significant cargo, the aircraft will be used for transport, rescue, and firefighting missions. The delivery includes pilot and technician training, manuals, and ground support tools. A third helicopter is expected soon.
