French defense company CILAS has unveiled a new prototype laser weapon in the form factor of an assault rifle, aiming to offer compact laser firepower for dismounted forces.

The new system, called HELMA-LP, was showcased at the SOFINS 2025 special operations exhibition, according to European Defense Review.

The HELMA-LP is a lightweight derivative of the HELMA-P ship-based laser system, which had undergone testing aboard a Horizon-class frigate in June 2023. Designed for engaging static ground targets, the HELMA-LP can operate effectively at ranges of 300 to 500 meters.

Unlike the larger naval version, the HELMA-LP's laser emitter is integrated into the body of an AR-15 assault rifle, with the focusing optics mounted at the front. A Picatinny rail allows for sighting attachments. Power is supplied by a battery pack stored in a backpack, connected via cable to the weapon. The full system weighs around 15 kilograms.

While less powerful than its naval predecessor, HELMA-LP can still burn through tarpaulins, disable optical sensors, and damage exposed electronics. It requires the operator to maintain focus on the target for between 5 and 15 seconds per engagement, with a maximum continuous use limit of 60 seconds per activation.

The prototype joins a growing field of directed-energy weapons. Recently, Ukrainian forces demonstrated the Tryzub laser complex, which is reportedly capable of neutralizing drones, cruise missiles, aerial bombs, and even aircraft at ranges from 3,000 to 5,000 meters, and can blind aerial threats at up to 10,000 meters, according to Military.

CILAS has not yet disclosed operational timelines for HELMA-LP.
