General Atomics has revealed a new high-energy laser combat module for its MQ-9B drone, marking a shift in airborne defense aimed at tackling drone threats more efficiently.

The module includes a High Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS) capable of generating up to 300 kilowatts of power, intended specifically to intercept and destroy drones during flight. The company stated that the laser weapon is installed under the drone’s wing and features a rotatable design for targeting without requiring the entire aircraft to turn.

A General Atomics spokesperson confirmed, “The system has been engineered to operate in all environmental conditions and provides a new layer of flexible air defense.”

Power for the laser is provided by special onboard batteries, while a visible air intake supports a cooling system needed for sustained laser operation.

The MQ-9B, a larger and more capable version of the MQ-9A, has a 24-meter wingspan and can remain airborne for up to 40 hours, offering persistent surveillance and now, potential laser-based intercept capability.

General Atomics sees laser-armed drones as a smarter way to counter low-cost threats without wasting expensive missiles—a growing concern in conflicts like those in Ukraine and the Red Sea, where high-cost interceptors have been used against much cheaper drones and cruise missiles. The MQ-9B’s primary mission will be to take down aerial threats, especially other drones, with future trials likely to test its power against cruise missiles too.

The announcement also follows the first demonstration of the Ukrainian "Tryzub" laser complex.
