The Maldives has publicly unveiled five Ajban 442A armoured military vehicles purchased from the United Arab Emirates, in a move that highlights its growing focus on military preparedness under President Mohammed Muizzu.

The previously undisclosed procurement came to public attention when the vehicles were seen being unloaded at Hulhulé Island earlier this month. According to local outlet Adhadhu, the armoured vehicles were acquired for the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and were officially presented during the MNDF’s 133rd anniversary parade in Male on Saturday, April 19.

Produced by the EDGE Group—a state-owned defense conglomerate based in the U.A.E.—the Ajban 442A is a multi-role tactical vehicle designed for high-mobility combat and security operations. The Maldives reportedly purchased five units, which were shipped first to Sri Lanka before being delivered to the Maldives by Maldives State Shipping (MSS) on April 9. A video surfaced showing the vehicles crossing the Sinamale Bridge on April 18, en route to Male.

Officials estimate that each vehicle, after customization, is worth approximately $700,000. Modifications include remote weapons stations, additional armour plating, roof hatches, and other weapon systems. The total value of the fleet stands around 54 million Maldivian Rufiyaa.

This purchase marks another addition to the Maldives’ expanding military inventory. Two years ago, the country acquired Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones for $37 million, and more recently, a missile launcher vessel from Turkey.

The Ministry of Defence has not yet officially commented on the deal or the reason for the confidential nature of the procurement.
