Denmark is stepping up its naval air defense capabilities with the accelerated acquisition of additional Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2 systems for the Royal Danish Navy's frigates.

The move includes both new purchases and earlier-than-planned deliveries, backed by DKK 880 million ($130M) from the country’s Acceleration Fund.

The decision follows a recommendation by Chief of Defence Michael Wiggers Hyldgaard and aims to strengthen the frigates’ defense against a range of aerial threats, including enemy aircraft, drones, and incoming missiles.

The Navy's frigates must be ready to resist threats on land, at sea and in the air,” said Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen. “Therefore, we are allocating funds to purchase more ESSM air defense missiles and acquire them faster, so that the Armed Forces’ combat power is increased, and the frigates can better defend themselves.”

The ESSM Block 2 is a medium-range surface-to-air missile that offers 360-degree coverage and is capable of engaging multiple types of airborne threats simultaneously. The upgraded system enhances interception against maneuvering anti-ship cruise missiles and airborne platforms.

The procurement is part of a broader plan under the Agreement on Strengthening the Danish Armed Forces' Combat Power. The agreement includes DKK 50 billion ($7.5B), with DKK 25 billion each allocated for 2025 and 2026 through the Acceleration Fund. From 2027 to 2033, an annual framework of DKK 10 billion will be set aside to support related defense expenditures, including acquisitions, personnel, and infrastructure.

A portion of the funding had already been earmarked in the first partial agreement of the 2024–2033 defense settlement to improve Denmark’s close-in air defense capabilities aboard its naval fleet.
