Rheinmetall has secured multiple infantry ammunition contracts from Estonia and Lithuania totaling approximately €33 million, as both Baltic nations continue to invest in ground combat capabilities.
In Q2 2025, Estonia awarded Rheinmetall a €17 million framework contract for hand grenades. Fragmentation grenades will be delivered in 2026 and 2027, followed by offensive grenades from 2026 to 2029.
In December 2024, Lithuania placed a €16 million order for tens of thousands of 40mm x 46 High Explosive Fragmentation (HEF) rounds. Deliveries are scheduled for 2026 and 2027.
Rheinmetall’s 40mm x 46 low-velocity ammunition is compatible with common grenade pistols and launchers, achieving 76 m/s velocity and a 400-meter range. It is already fielded by other NATO members.
The company also offers a 40mm x 46 Medium Velocity (MV) variant, reaching 100 m/s with a flatter trajectory and an effective range of 900 meters. In 2025, Rheinmetall will begin series production of the Squad Support Weapon 40 — the first magazine-fed, automatic, shoulder-fired grenade launcher that fires both low- and medium-velocity rounds.
Rheinmetall’s portfolio includes 40mm x 53 High Velocity ammunition as well, with a muzzle speed of 130 m/s and a range up to 2,000 meters.
