Slovenia has ordered two more IRIS-T SLM fire units under the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), expanding its ground-based air defence capabilities. The contract was signed in July by Diehl Defence and the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), which acted on behalf of the Republic of Slovenia.
This follows Slovenia’s initial purchase of one fire unit in January 2024. With this latest order, Slovenia will receive radar systems, tactical operations centers, missile launchers, IRIS-T SLM missiles, and logistical support. Additional support equipment includes mobile workshops, spare parts, and reloading vehicles.
The IRIS-T SLM system is designed to counter aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones at ranges up to 40 km and altitudes up to 20 km. The system features 360-degree coverage, high mobility, and the ability to engage multiple targets with a small crew.
This marks the first follow-up procurement within the ESSI framework, aimed at improving interoperability among NATO members and creating joint procurement benefits. Twenty-four countries now participate in ESSI.
The IRIS-T system has been in operational use in Ukraine, where it reportedly demonstrated a high hit rate against mass air attacks.
