Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer has delivered the first three A-29N Super Tucano light attack aircraft to Portugal.

This marks the start of a program that will see 12 aircraft integrated into the Portuguese Air Force (FAP) under NATO standards.

The aircraft touched down at OGMA’s maintenance, repair and overhaul facility in Alverca do Ribatejo, near Lisbon, the company announced on September 1. They will now undergo modifications to receive NATO-standard communication and navigation equipment. The aircraft arrived carrying long-range ferry tanks and were temporarily registered in Brazil.

Portugal signed the contract with Embraer in December 2024, becoming the first customer for the NATO-standard Super Tucano. The deal, valued at around €200 million ($226.9 million), includes 12 aircraft, a flight simulator, and support services. Deliveries are expected to be completed within two to three years.

The Super Tucano is designed for multiple missions including advanced pilot training, close air support, armed reconnaissance, and border surveillance.

Lisbon intends to use the new fleet primarily for training and low-threat operational missions in Africa, alongside its existing Embraer C-390 transport aircraft.
