Turkey has tested its domestically produced SOM-J cruise missile from an F-16 fighter jet, Turkey's Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacir has announced.
The test performed by the TÜBİTAK Defense Industries Research and Development Institute (TÜBİTAK SAGE) confirmed that the missile was capable of performing sophisticated maneuvers, evading radar and staying at ultra-low altitude over water. The missile hit a surface target accurately, the ministry stated.
The SOM-J, jointly developed by Roketsan and TÜBİTAK SAGE, is intended for use against sea and land targets. It can be supported in several platforms, such as F-16s, the future Turkish KAAN fighter jet, and drones.
With a range of up to 275 km, the SOM-J is guided by GPS, inertial, and terrain-referenced navigation systems, supported by an infrared seeker. It carries a 140 kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead.
Serial production of the missile will be carried out by Roketsan. The SOM program began in 2006 to provide the Turkish Air Force with a medium-range precision-strike capability.
