Germany’s Bundestag Budget Committee has approved four new procurement projects covering guided missiles, infantry fighting vehicles, and reconnaissance systems as part of the country’s military modernization.
The decision, announced on October 15, includes the purchase of Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2 systems for close-range naval air defense. The ESSM, deployed on Class 124 frigates and planned for Class 123 and Class 126 ships, is part of a 12-nation NATO Seasparrow program. Funded through the defense budget, the acquisition will strengthen Germany’s surface fleet air-defense capabilities.
The committee also approved the Luchs 2 “New Generation Reconnaissance Vehicle” program to replace parts of the Fennek fleet. The contract covers development, production, and delivery of reference and series vehicles. A related €25 million authorization covers procurement of MK 25 KBA 25-millimeter machine guns for the Luchs 2, financed through the Bundeswehr special fund under budget line 14.
Additionally, the Bundestag cleared the purchase of Schakal infantry fighting vehicles, combining the Boxer armored chassis with the Puma turret. The contract includes spare parts, training systems, and options for protection upgrades, fire detection, and drone defense. Deliveries are planned between 2027 and 2031.
The Schakal project, managed through the European Armaments Organization (OCCAR), also enables joint procurement with the Dutch Army, reinforcing cooperation within the German-Dutch Corps.
