The HMS Anson has arrived at HMAS Stirling on February 22, marking another major step in Australia’s transition toward operating conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines.
According to officials, the Astute-class submarine will undergo a planned maintenance period the first time a United Kingdom nuclear-powered submarine has been maintained in Australia.
The visit marks a key milestone under AUKUS and the first UK submarine deployment since the Optimal Pathway announcement nearly three years ago.
The maintenance activity brings together UK, US and Australian personnel and industry, strengthening trilateral cooperation. Two Royal Australian Navy sailors will embark aboard Anson to further their nuclear training and gain operational experience.
The work also supports preparations for Submarine Rotational Force – West (SRF-West), scheduled to begin in 2027, when US and UK nuclear-powered submarines will rotate through Western Australia. Around 15 Australian companies, including ASC Pty Ltd, are contributing to the effort.
