The Netherlands’ Ministry of Defence has decided to integrate the French F21 MK2 heavyweight torpedo into its four new Orka-class submarines during the production phase, replacing an earlier plan to use MK48 torpedoes from the current Walrus fleet.
The original plan was to move MK48 torpedoes from the current Walrus-class submarines to the new boats. However, the ministry decided it can replace the MK48 sooner than expected and chose the F21 MK2 instead.
The ministry said the new submarines must be capable of operating across the highest spectrum of violence. Rapid technological developments are expected to increase threats from manned and unmanned enemy systems equipped with anti-torpedo weapons. To address these risks with high precision, the ministry selected the F21 MK2 heavyweight torpedo developed by Naval Group. The company is also responsible for building the Orka-class submarines.
Delivery of the first Orka-class submarine is scheduled from 2033.
