General Dynamics Electric Boat was awarded a $15,383,494,792 modification to a previously awarded contract for additional Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines design, support and sustainment.
The contract includes integrated enterprise plan initiatives for the class, and submarine industrial base supplier development enhancement efforts to support Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine program execution, a Pentagon contract announcement said Wednesday.
The industrial base development work is for the furtherance of the Navy’s plan of serial production of Columbia- and Virginia-class attack submarines.
Work will be performed in Groton, Connecticut (21%) besides other locations and is expected to be completed by June 2035.
General Dynamics Electric Boat Information:
At 560 feet long with a displacement of nearly 21,000 tons, the submarines of the Columbia-class will be the largest ever built by the United States.
General Dynamics Electric Boat is the prime contractor on the Columbia program, which will replace the aging Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines.
Ships of the Columbia-class will have a fuel core that will power the submarine for its entire service life, eliminating the need for a mid-service refueling. In addition to its complement of missiles, the submarine will be armed with MK 48 torpedoes and will feature superior acoustic performance and state-of-the-art sensors.
The District of Columbia (SSBN 826) and Wisconsin (SSBN 827) are currently under construction.
The future Columbia-class submarines will join the existing Virginia -class submarines as the mainstay of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet.
