The Indian Navy is set to commission its stealth frigate Taragiri (F41) on April 3, at Visakhapatnam, in a ceremony to be presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Taragiri is the fourth ship under the Project 17A programme and has been built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai. The 6,670-tonne warship incorporates design changes aimed at reducing radar cross-section, enabling lower detectability during operations.

The frigate has more than 75 percent indigenous content and involves contributions from over 200 micro, small and medium enterprises, aligned with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The programme supports domestic manufacturing and employment within India’s defence industrial base.

The ship is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas propulsion system, designed to support both high-speed and long-endurance missions. Its onboard systems include surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, integrated through a combat management system.

Taragiri is intended for multiple roles, including maritime combat operations and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.
