Did a Iran-Operated Chinese Satellite Provide Pin-point Targeting Data to Tehran?

he accuracy with Iranian drones and missiles struck U.S. bases in Gulf countries during March this year could not have been possible without access to highly reliable satellite and GPS data.

It is now speculated that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) negotiated a $37 million deal in 2014 to receive operational control of the TEE-01B Earth observation satellite from China.

The satellite was launched from China in June 2024, after which control was quickly transferred to the IRGC.

A notable feature of the system is that flight control and data collection are carried out by ground stations located in Beijing, allowing the Iranian side to avoid the construction and operation of its own control infrastructure.

A key feature that allowed the Iranians to get highly accurate location data is the stated spatial resolution of 0.5 meters of the TEE-01B satellite. This enables the identification of individual aircraft,

armored vehicles, radars as well as airfield infrastructure and fuel systems.

This level of detail represents a significant expansion of the capabilities of the Iranian satellite constellation, effectively bringing it closer to the best global standards of civilian and commercial satellite imagery.

As evidence of its practical application, according to leaks in the Russian media, after the strike on Prince Sultan Air Force Base (Saudi Arabia) on March 14, which damaged US Air Force tanker aircraft, this satellite captured and, presumably, transmitted detailed images of the target and the surrounding area to the customer. This demonstrates a closed-loop combat operation: reconnaissance, target designation, and results monitoring.

The architecture of the satellite's control system makes it highly resistant to physical jamming. Since the system can be controlled from a laptop. From an operational perspective, the satellite has become a tool for strategic reconnaissance and precise topographic targeting.

China doesn't officially publicize its role in this strike guidance system, though many media reports have pointed out that highly precise satellite imagery could not have come from any other source.

About the satellite

The TEE-01B Earth Observation Satellite, manufactured by the Chinese company CGST, was allegedly sold to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp in 2024 for $37 million. According to CGST’s website, the project was the first collaboration between itself and Earth Eye. CGST further described the satellite as manufactured to meet the needs of unidentified “high-end customers.”
