After Germany, UK Changes Warship Acquisition Plans

The U.K. Navy has canceled plans to replace it's aging Type 45 air-defense destroyers with the new generation Type 83 guided missile destroyers.

Instead, London plans to acquire six Joint Combat Vessels (JCVs) capable of operating surface and undersea unmanned systems in the early 2030s.

The decision was announced as part of the UK Ministry of Defence’s long-awaited Defence Investment Plan. The new approach outlines how the Royal Navy’s future will be shaped by unmanned systems and a network-centric operations concept.

According to the Ministry of Defence, JCVs will provide command, control, and coordination for unmanned platforms in the air, on the surface, and underwater. The new ships will also serve as central platforms managing task sharing between manned warships and autonomous systems.

Once commissioned, the ships will operate alongside frigates in the Navy and will conduct joint operations with autonomous naval platforms to be commissioned in the future.

"Developed for modern warfare"

UK Defence Minister Dan Jarvis stated in his announcement regarding the new platforms that the JCVs would be hybrid warships developed to suit the increasingly challenging threat environment.

Germany had made a similar decision.

The UK's decision to abandon the Type 83 program has brought to mind similar defense procurement problems recently experienced in Europe.

Germany recently decided to cancel its F126 frigate program due to increased costs, long delivery times, and technical problems. The Berlin government is now considering procuring eight MEKO A200 frigates instead, which are considered lower risk and faster to produce.

Thus, Europe's two major navies have turned to alternative platforms in their new generation warship projects that are less costly and can be put into service in a shorter time.
