Ukraine advanced the potential purchase of about 100 interceptor missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems following the massive Russian attack against Kyiv yesterday.
Ukraine is hoping to make the purchase using a loan from the European Union, according to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
The statement came against the backdrop of a massive attack using 25 ballistic and hypersonic missiles that took place on the night of July 1.
According to the MoD, the cost of the purchase is estimated at approximately $1 billion which Ukraine wants to be funded through an European Union loan.
The MoD also reported that this year, Ukraine for the first time began receiving missiles for Patriot from the warehouses of European partners.
Ukraine also sent letters to almost 40 partner countries asking them to urgently transfer Patriot missiles from existing stocks to Ukraine this month in exchange for future deliveries contracted for Ukraine.
Ukraine deploys expensive Patriot missiles against Russian drones
Ukraine has often been criticized for expending patriot PAC-3 missile far too eagerly against drones when it should use them against Russian cruise and ballistic missiles.
Nevertheless in mid-June, Germany announced the allocation of $400 million for the purchase of anti-aircraft missiles for Ukrainian Patriots.
