Embraer Defense & Security has selected SELEX Galileo, a Finmeccanica company, to supply the company’s Gabbiano surveillance radar for the new KC-390 tanker/ transport aircraft. SELEX Galileo’s Gabbiano is an X-band radar based on a solid state transmitter that delivers superior performance in high resolution modes and detection ranges. “We are working with Embraer on a number of airborne programmes, and we are particularly proud for the selection of this advanced radar sensor as a baseline for Embraer’s new tactical transport aircraft. The KC-390 is poised to play a key role in the tactical airlift worldwide market and we are pleased to be part of it .” said Fabrizio Giulianini, CEO of SELEX Galileo, adding: “We are also confident that becoming a partner in this programme will open up the opportunity to further expand our collaboration with Embraer and our footprint in the Country”. Gabbiano is designed to meet the current and future mission requirements of the Brazilian Air Force (Forca Aerea Brasilera, FAB), and of all future KC-390 customers. Based on Modular Radar Processor (MRP) technology, the Gabbiano offers the potential to easily accommodate future growth options. In fact, the Gabbiano’s unique high resolution radar modes are mostly implemented via built-in software and any new feature or performance enhancement can be delivered through software upgrades with no need for hardware retrofit.
