India’s defense public sector unit Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has sent out a Request For Proposal (RFP) to BAE Systems for potential order to supply products and services for the manufacture of 20 Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) aircraft. HAL will build the Hawk advanced trainer jet in Bangalore that will be used in the Indian Air Force's aerobatic team. This is the third contract that is placed by the HAL for the supply of materials and equipment for the aircraft. Guy Griffiths, managing director for international business at BAE, said, “This is a tremendous opportunity to build on the success of Hawk in India and demonstrates the progress we are making in capturing significant opportunities to address the defense modernization requirements of the Indian Government. Together with HAL, we look forward to giving the Indian Air Force’s display team a fantastic aircraft”. In 2004, India had signed a deal for 66 Hawks and in 2010 placed an order for 57 jet trainer of which 17 were to be deployed with the Indian Navy. The cost of the Hawk project is estimated to be INR 20,000 crore and is expected to be completed by 2017.
