L-3 Global Communications Systems has won a U.S Army contract worth $36 million to upgrade the Satellite Data Network Family of Terminals (SDN-FOT). Under the contract, L-3 GCS will upgrade 3,850 existing L-3 GCS made satellite terminals that are now in service with the Army. Specifically L-3 GCS will revamp the satellite terminal’s modems with next-generation technology. Because L-3 GCS has successfully met the benchmark to produce its first ten satellite terminals within the first 90 days of its existing $500 million, DoD is set to increase the $500 million contract ceiling to $600 million. These state of the art terminals produced for the now $600 million DoD contract will provide high speed data connectivity to forward deployed troops and will be designed and manufactured at the L-3 GCS facility in Ontario County. “New jobs, that support our soldiers, are coming to the Rochester-Finger Lakes region thanks to this continued federal investment in L-3 GCS satellite terminals,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. “L-3 GCS expects to add dozens of jobs over the next six months as a result of these contracts to upgrade and increase production of satellite terminals that safeguard our troops and keep our military strong. This contract means continued, high-volume production for DoD, and an economic boost for L-3 Global Communications Systems, its workers, and Ontario County where these terminals are made. This extended federal investment proves that L-3 GCS continues to be a first-class firm doing great work in New York”. When the satellite terminals are deployed in the field, they enable the military to better manage their supply needs and requirements faster in order to keep up with resupply requirements on a real-time basis. This mitigates exposing our troops to unnecessary dangers and ensures our soldiers on the front lines have the supplies they need when they need them.
