The CVN 79 aircraft carrier of Hungtinton Ingalls Shipbuilding which will be the future US Navy’s John F. Kennedy supercarrier was set afloat earlier this week and is expected to enter service 2 years last. At about the same time China’s second aircraft carrier, the Shandong entered service with the Peoples Liberation Army- Navy (PLA-N). Defenseworld.net looks at the features of the two carriers.

The lighter and smaller Shandong on paper should be no competition to the much more technologically advanced CVN 79. However, the purpose which the Shandong was designed, which is to patrol the South China Sea, should help it to be a major part of China’s force projection in the region.
