Israel is working to convert a Boeing 767 into a refuelling tanker with the intention of bringing Iranian targets within striking range of its fighter aircraft.

Initially, Israel had planned to replace its converted Boeing 707 with the KC-46A Pegasus but changed its plans because of the company put the date back by another eight months and the price increased by half a billion dollars.

American sources, who were quoted as saying by various Israeli media on Monday, pointed out that if Israel seeks to retain the option of attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities after Barack Obama’s exit from office in Jan. 2017, Israel can’t wait for the Pegasus.

The Boeing 707 in current service no longer meets the fluctuating conditions in the Middle East, after a multibillion investment in its conversion to a long-flight refuelling tanker. Work is therefore in progress on the conversion of the Boeing 767 as its replacement.
