Kuwait Signs MoU With Italy To Buy 28 Eurofighter Typhoons

Kuwait has signed a MoU  to procure 28 Eurofighter Typhoon jets from the Italian government for 8 billion euros (US $9 billion).

The 20-year long deal would be finalized in a few weeks, Italian daily, Corriere della Sera reported Friday. The Eurofighter is jointly produced by Finmeccanica, BAE Systems and Airbus.

“This new agreement is the confirmation of the superiority of the Eurofighter over its competitors and will provide a great opportunity for further Eurofighter orders,” Eurofighter CEO Alberto Gutierrez said in a statement.

A formal sales agreement is expected within a month, Kuwaiti media reported

Kuwait has 27 F/A-18 Hornet multi-role fighter aircraft in service.

Various media reports said that Kuwait will buy 22 single-seat and six twin-seat Typhoons and that it might chose to become the first export customer for the new active electronically scanned array radar being developed for the fighter by Selex ES.

With Kuwait, Eurofighter has a commitment of 599 aircraft. Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain, Austria and Saudi Arabia are the countries who have 444 Eurofighters in service. Oman has ordered 12 Typhoons in 2012.
