Japan is setting up a new defense procurement agency on October 1st to deal with research and development, procurement and export of defense equipment.
The defense ministry plans to curb corruption by strengthening its auditing capability at its new agency and cut procurement costs by bulk purchase of common defense equipment for the Ground, Maritime and Air Forces, Japan Times reported Wednesday.
The agency will integrate the ministry’s existing defense equipment group that includes equipment divisions of the Ground, Maritime and Air self-defense forces, the ministry’s Equipment Procurement and Construction Office and the ministry’s Technical Research and Development Institute.
The agency will have some 1,800 personnel, including 400 uniformed SDF officers.
