Topol-M, an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)

Russia test- fired its RS-12M Topol intercontinental ballistic missile capable of delivering a 550 kiloton yield nuclear warhead over 10000 kms range.

The launch of the  intercontinental ballistic missile based on Topol missile happened from the  Plesetsk cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk Region today, Sputnik news said quoting a defence ministry spokesman.

According to the ministry's spokesman Col. Igor Egorov, the launch, aimed at testing a prospective warhead, was carried out from the Kapustin Yar range in southern Russia’s Astrakhan Region at 3.12 p.m. Moscow time.

The simulated warhead hit a designated target at the Sary-Shagan range in Kazakhstan within set precision parameters, Egorov said.

The Topol entered service with the Russian Strategic Missile Forces in 1988 and is being gradually replaced with more advanced Topol-M and Yars mobile missile systems.

The test launch comes amidst heightened tensions between Moscow and the West over Ukraine and Russian action in Syria.
