The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today confirmed shooting down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet using an Indian Air Force MiG-21 while losing another MiG-21 during the engagement.

“The Pakistan Air Force targeted Indian military installations this morning. IAF detected and foiled the attempt. In an aerial engagement one Pakistan Air Force fighter aircraft was shot down by a MiG-21 bison of the Indian Air Force. The Pakistani aircraft was seen by the ground forces falling from the sky on the Pakistan side.  In this engagement, we have unfortunately lost one MiG-21. The pilot is missing in action,” Raveesh Kumar, Official Spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs  said in a statement Wednesday.

“Pakistan has claimed that he is in their custody. We are ascertaining the facts,” he added.

The spokesperson did not confirm whether the PAF aircraft was a F-16 during his briefing.
