South Korea handed over Alugoro, a 1,400-ton submarine, to the Indonesian Navy today.
The 61-meter Chang Bogo-class submarine was the third unit South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. delivered to Indonesia under a 1.3 trillion-won ($1.15 billion) contract in 2011 to export three submarines. The first two submarines were delivered in 2017 and 2018. They are equipped with torpedoes and guided missiles.
The submarines are described to be Korea's original model, bigger and more advanced than Indonesia's refurbished Type 209/1300. The Type 209 is a class of diesel-electric attack submarine developed exclusively for export by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft of Germany. The original variant (Type 209/1100) was designed in the late 1960s.
