The Egyptian Navy received a German S-44 submarine in Alexandria on Monday.
The craft is question, a 209/1400 mod class submarine is the last of four that Egypt received with the aim enhance its defense capabilities and combat efficiency, an Egyptian military spokesman said in a statement.
The contract for the delivery of the first two 209/1400 mod class submarines to Egypt was signed in 2011. The decision to add additional two units was taken in 2015.
The first was delivered in December 2016. The second was handed over in August 2017, while the third was launched in May 2019 and the fourth in 2021.
The 62-meter-long diesel-electric submarine, with a capacity that can include up to 30 crew members, is capable of conducting surveillance and intelligence-gathering activities
The submarine is built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft and displaces 1,450t surfaced and 1,600t dived. It is manned by a crew of 30. The hull has a length of 62m, breadth of 7.6m and height of 5.8m. It has a maximum diving depth of 250m. It has a maximum speed of 10kt surfaced and 22kt dived.
