Syrian port of Latakia was reportedly hit by Israeli air strikes early Tuesday.
"The Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression with several missiles. Our air defenses repelled the Israeli aggression in Latakia," a military source told government-owned Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). The report added that five explosions were heard in the Latakia port.
It was a rare attack on the port, a vital facility where much of Syria’s imports are brought into the war-torn country. An opposition war monitor said the strikes targeted weapons shipment meant for Iranian militias in the country.
The attack targeted the port's container yard, causing a number of containers to catch fire but without causing casualties. The blaze is now under control.
There was no comment from the Israeli military.
