The Pakistan Air Force today inducted the first batch of six Chinese-made J-10CE fighter jets at Minhas Air Base in Kamra.
The total order for the aircraft is said to be between 24-36. Actual numbers have not been revealed.
The J-10CE is a competitor to the French Rafale jets which are in possession with India. Islamabad is said to have ordered these aircraft to attain parity with the Rafales. The J-10CEs are equipped with the latest generation AESA radar, claimed to provide similar coverage as that of the Rafale jet.
"With the delivery of the J-10CEs, China and Pakistan opened a new chapter in aviation defense cooperation, and it will significantly contribute to the further deepening of the China-Pakistan All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership," the aircraft's maker, Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) said in a statement.
According to AVIC, the J-10C is capable of striking multiple targets from beyond visual range under complex electromagnetic environment, and can deliver precision attacks on ground targets with multiple guidance modes.
The aircraft boasts mid-to-low altitude combat maneuverability, supersonic flight, short-range takeoff and landing, large combat radius, long range and mid-air refueling capabilities.
The J-10CE is the first aircraft exported to be equipped with China's domestically developed WS-10 engines. It also comes with China's most powerful short-range combat missile, the PL-10, and beyond-visual-range-missile, the PL-15.
