Russian air defense systems shot down a Ukrainian Su-25 aircraft during an attempt by the Ukrainian army to strike at the strategic Zmeiny (snake) Island in the Back Sea, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.
"The enemy once again made an unsuccessful attempt to strike with aircraft and multiple launch rocket systems on Zmeiny Island. As a result of repulsing the attack by the Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missile and gun system, a Su-25 aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force and 12 rockets were shot down," - Konashenkov said at a briefing on Sunday.
"In an air battle, a MiG-29 aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force was shot down near the village of Zelenodolsk, Dnepropetrovsk region," he said.
Konashenkov said that eight Ukrainian drones were also destroyed by Russian air defense systems.
"Also, 19 multiple rocket launchers were shot down in the areas of the settlements of Suligovka, Glinskoye, Sukhaya Kamenka in the Kharkiv region, Makeevka in the Donetsk People's Republic and over Zmeiny Island," an official representative of the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Russia Rains missiles on Kyiv
Loud explosion were heard in Kyiv on Sunday morning as several missiles rained down on unspecified targets, Ukrainain media reported. While one missile hit an aparrtment building, another landed in a playground.
Reuters reported that U.S. President Joe Biden referred to the overnight missile strike as "barbarism."
