An F-35A duo operated by the Royal Netherlands Air Force carried out the first interception of Russian aircraft from Poland.
Confirming the development, the Dutch defense ministry said three Russian aircraft – a IL-20M Coot-A and two Su-27 Flankers – were involved in the incident on February 13. The F-35s escorted them from a distance and handed over escort to NATO partners.
The Russian aircraft approached Poland from Kaliningrad.
Eight RNLAF F-35s will be stationed in Poland in February and March. Four of these fighter aircraft are available from Malbork Air Base for surveillance of NATO airspace over Eastern Europe. These aircraft will intercept any unidentified aircraft approaching NATO airspace.
