BAE Systems Secures U.S. Army Agreement, Sparks Potential Restart of M777 Production

BAE Systems has secured an agreement with the U.S. Army to produce major structures for the M777 lightweight howitzer, marking a significant stride toward the potential restart of M777 production.

The Undefinitized Contract Action (UCA), capped at $50 million, not only allows BAE Systems to initiate deliveries promptly but also facilitates the finalization of contract details and overall value with the U.S. Army. The agreement focuses on the production of essential titanium structures, the core components of the M777 gun, with the first deliveries expected in 2025.

BAE Systems plans to collaborate with its supply chain in both the UK and the U.S. to manufacture these vital structures. The deal has sparked heightened interest in the M777 gun system from regions spanning Europe, Asia, and the Americas, setting the stage for a potential revival of M777 production in the UK. This presents a valuable opportunity for both new and existing users to participate in a fresh M777 production initiative and capitalize on the benefits derived from a robust production line and economies of scale.

The timing of this agreement is particularly noteworthy, given the active deployment of M777 howitzers in operations in Ukraine, where they have played a crucial role in the conflict against Russia's invasion. The U.S., Canada, and Australia have previously sent M777 towed howitzers to support Ukraine, with the country having received nearly 200 155mm howitzers from the U.S. alone.

Weighing only half as much as other 155mm towed howitzers, the M777 provides rapid reaction capability and has a proven track record for delivering decisive firepower during sustained combat conditions.

BAE Systems aims to revitalize its supply chain in both the UK and the U.S. to build the titanium structures for the M777, potentially leading to the reopening of the production line. While the initial production work took place in Barrow-in-Furness, England, and a final assembly and test facility in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the company is exploring options for the renewed production line.
