South Korea has announced the successful test-firing of an enhanced version of its domestically developed Korean Tactical Surface to Surface Missile-I (KTSSM-I).
Military sources revealed on Friday that the launch of the modified KTSSM-I took place on Thursday at the testing site of the Agency for Defense Development in Taean County, located 109 kilometers southwest of Seoul. The upgraded missile variant is designed to be mounted on the domestically produced Chunmoo multiple launch rocket system.
The development of the KTSSM-I was initiated by South Korea to address the need for precision strike capabilities against North Korean artillery hidden in caves, following the shelling of Yeonpyeong, a northwestern border island of South Korea, by North Korea in 2010. The attack resulted in the tragic deaths of two civilians and two Marines.
Known for its ability to penetrate the ground by several meters, the KTSSM-I aims to target underground installations effectively.
